Course content
From traditional hand work to modern machine assisted methods, you will be guided step by step through a number of useful techniques.
The first few weeks of the course include demonstrations and practical activities on shaping and forming, basic halving, mortise and dovetail joints using hand and power tools. This is followed by some sessions in wood machining, the use of saws, planers, timber conversion, planning projects, drawing up cutting lists, timber selection etc.
If you choose to continue onto course two and three, you will focus on incorporating these skills into a piece of furniture totally hand crafted by you.
Teaching
Sessions usually start with a discussion & demonstration of new techniques. You will also receive an induction to the wood machining workshop where you will use machines supervised. The majority of the course is spent doing your own work at the benches.
Please note that some new students will start each term. If you are a continuing student, your tutor may take some time inducting new students at the start of the term, although projects are set up for you to work on with the support of the technician.
