The course will cover the fundamental principals of garden design, demonstrating the main stages of the process and how to create simple, contemporary designs. Discover imaginative and practical solutions for small spaces such as creating privacy, reducing noise and selecting suitable plants and hard landscaping materials for city gardens. Learn how to get the most from your garden and translate your ideas onto paper with a simple scaled plan.

** Please bring a printed selection of design ideas from magazines or the internet to your first class.

About this course

- Draw your garden plan to scale 1:50
- Use garden design principles in your plan
- Create a mood board for your urban garden style
- Create a list of different materials and plants that you will use and drawn a basic planting combination
- Apply design techniques to improve difficult areas in your garden.

Basic drawing equipment including scale rulers will be provided. In addition students should bring an A4 pad of layout paper, scrapbook, pencil, eraser, and a couple of fine point black fibre tip pens. Please also bring a printed selection of ideas from magazines or the internet to your first class.

Course programme

- The principles and styles of successful urban garden design
- How to take a basic survey and analysis of your garden
- How to research inspiration and create a mood board
- How to draw a basic layout and planting plan to scale
- How to select hard landscaping and planting for urban gardens
- How to overcome urban garden challenges: noise, privacy, shade etc.

The course will be a combination of practical workshops, lectures, informal group discussions and demonstrations taught in the classroom.

Additional information

This course is designed to give you the confidence to use the skills you will learn as a springboard to more advanced study in Garden Design. You may wish to further develop your skills and interest in Design through a range of courses at the City Lit in garden design and other disciplines that would compliment or enhance your existing skills. You can enhance your digital drawing skills through courses in Sketchup Pro and Vectorworks. You can explore your interest in Art and Design through our Art and Design Portfolio course and prepare for a career in Art and Design on the Foundation course in Art and Design.
