The course will explore the hidden truth that lie beyond the long and painful process which led to the Unità d'Italia. We will focus on the Reign of Two Sicilies, which was mostly affected by the unification, both in terms of human and economic losses.

About this course

By the end of the course students should be able to talk and comment on literary texts, and be able to discuss and debate one of the lesser known and most hidden aspects of Italian history.

No other cost. Students will just need to bring a pen and paper.

This is a lecture and is therefore tutor-led. Facts will be presented through the use of video clips, presentations, hand-outs etc.

Course programme

The topics covered will be: a brief introduction to Italian history and its leading figures before the unification (1861); a journey into the Reign of two Sicily which, at the time, was the most developed region of Italy and whose capital, Naples, was the third European city after London and Paris; the role played by the English; the civil war that broke out in the south of Italy in the aftermath of the unification.
