Is it for me?
Chemistry is offered for study at AS in year 12 and A2 in year 13.

What do I need?
Foundation chemistry, organic chemistry and an intro GCSE C grade or above in Science to begin the AS level and then successful completion of the AS to continue to A level.

What will I study?
The AS level consists of three modules:
  • Foundation chemistry : giving a grounding in all the areas covered in future modules
  • Chains & Rings: giving a basic introduction to organic chemistry - the chemistry of carbon
  • How Far - How Fast? + Experimental skills: introduction to rates of reaction and equilibrium work plus the first practical skills paper.
  • Chains, rings and spectroscopy: an extension of the carbon chemistry work covered in AS level
  • Trends & Patterns + Biochemistry: patterns in the periodic table plus a unit on chemical aspects of biochemistry
  • Unifying concepts + Experimental skills: further work on energetics and rates of reaction plus a second practical examination.
Assessment
Each module in the course has a written examination and the practical examinations are 1 hour and a half long. The written exams are no longer than 1 hour 30minutes and consist of structured / short answer questions with some elements of extended writing. The practical does have a planning exercise with some similarities to GCSE coursework.

How will I be taught?
The study of Chemistry offers the opportunity for candidates to devise and plan experimental or investigative activities and interpret, explain, evaluate and communicate the results.
Youll be able to visit the university departments in Newcastle and Sunderland for lectures and practical work. Therell also be possibilities for you to attend project weeks at Durham University.

GCSE AS/A level Chemistry

What are the career opportunities?
Physiotherapy, environmental work, medicine, dentistry etc. (chemistry is considered essential for all these Degrees in chemistry, chemical engineering, biological degrees, pharmacy, degree courses)

Does it include key skills?
All students following full time courses will be expected to develop their skills in English, Maths and ICT.
