Course programme

GCSE English Language (Mature)
This is a one year re-sit course designed to give students the necessary reading and writing skills to achieve a C grade in English which will allow them to continue their studies at a higher level. It is an essential course and provides another chance in a new environment. The choice of the Mature GCSE reflects a different ethos in both the teaching and the materials chosen so that students feel they are moving on in their development rather than doing the same materials again in the same way.

What will I study on this course?
You will study two Literature texts to produce coursework which is assessed for reading ability. One will be a Shakespearean play and the other will be a modern novel. The poetry is also tested for reading skills but through an anthology which is tested in the summer examinations.

Your writing skills are tested through two coursework essays: one personal non-fiction and the other a creative fictional piece. In the exam writing skills are tested through writing for a range of different purposes and for different audiences.

How is this course assessed?
This one-year course, with marks being awarded for coursework as well as a written examination. It aims to provide the writing skills necessary for both employment and further education.

The coursework involves three different oral exercises, including a presentation to
a small group; these account for 20% of your final mark. In addition, you will produce a folder of four essays, two based on literature (a novel and a Shakespeare play), one autobiographical piece and one piece of creative writing. Again this counts for 20% of your final mark. In the summer there are two written examinations

What kind of student will do well on this course?
We have an excellent record with students who realise that this examination is the key to further achievement and who recognise that they need to approach the subject in a methodical way. We offer plenty of advice on skills they need to improve and exercises which will strengthen their technical competence.
