Course Content:
This is a retake course for students wishing to improve their D grade in Mathematics to a C. The course builds upon your previous experience at key stage four. You will continue studying following aspects of the subject:
Using and applying mathematics - an integral part of the curriculum:
Number - 25%
Algebra - 25%
Shape and space - 25%
Handling data - 25%
Teaching Learning Methods:
You will encounter a variety of approaches, including:
Group work
Teacher presentation of key materials/examples
Taking notes
Homework
Revision
Tests (including one mock)
Assessment:
Students will take the Higher tier with grades A* - D available for the Statistics and Number Modules and Foundation for the Algebra and shape Module. In the examination you will:
- Recall knowledge
- Extract information from tables, charts and diagrams
- Perform calculations with and without a calculator
*** Module 1: Statistics and probability is examined in November
*** Module 2: Number is examined in March
*** Module 3: Algebra, Shape and Space is examined in June and is worth 50%

Skills & Commitment:
Students must be punctual to all lessons and, on average, spend two hours a week on homework.
Perseverance and commitment are vital if a candidate is to improve upon their previous GCSE performance. A degree of maturity and autonomy is expected throughout the course.
Cost:
Students are provided with text books and practice exam papers. Students will need to buy file paper or exercise books as well as a scientific calculator and the usual mathematical equipment.
Progression:
Many employers, professional bodies and higher education institutes demand a grade C or above in mathematics as part of their entry requirements. Information as to which universities and courses demand a grade C or above will be available at enrolment. Some GNVQ and AS level programmes also require a good mathematics grade.
