You will be able to use a lot of what you learn in GCSE mathematics in other subjects you are studying or wish to study in the future. Examples are:
· In science use formula and solve equations
· In geography read charts and diagrams and use statistics
· In design and technology use measures and make scale drawings
GCSE mathematics covers a wide range of basic mathematical knowledge and skills, grouped into 4 areas: Number and algebra, Shape, space and measure, Data handling and using and applying mathematics
Successful students will receive a grade B, C, D, or E. Employers and universities will normally only accept grades C or above as a "successful" achievement
Special Features: Students are expected to have a full set of mathematical instruments and a scientific calculator
Course Format: This is a one-year course, which will cover two modules and 2 terminal papers each with the same subject content i.e. number & algebra, shape & space and handling data. There will be two pieces of coursework assessing "Using and Applying Maths". The first module will be taken in January the second in March and the coursework will be completed by the end of January. The terminal papers will be taken in June.
Regular assessed homework will be set and informal homework will be given on a regular basis.
Externally, two modular exams two pieces of coursework and terminal exams will be taken throughout the course.
You will be taught by a trained mathematician and whilst studying you will be given the opportunity to
· Use mathematical skills and knowledge to solve problems
· Use logic and reason to solve problems
· Break down problems into small steps in order to solve them
· Use mathematics you learn to solve problems that might happen in real life
· Learn how to use a calculator to solve problems quickly and effectively
Progression: It is a pre-requisite for many further education courses and it is a very desirable qualification for many employers
