How will I study?

Unit 1: This concentrates on the basic 4 operations of Mathematics, using them for fractions, multiples, factors, negative numbers and the special numbers – primes, squares and cubes. Study of statistical graphs is followed by measurement and symmetry of shapes. Basic geometry follows with graphs, angles, bearings, congruency and tessellations,. The unit ends with an understanding of probability before a more detailed use of statistics which was mentioned earlier including correlation. Unit 2: The early emphasis is on being able to work with a scientific calculator. It is then used to study, percentages, ratio, averages, perimeter, area, speed and proportion. Algebra is introduced to deal with linear equations, trial and improvement. The geometry section is expanded to deal with patterns, volumes, transformations, constructions and circles. Probability is studied for combined events, experimental probability and two way tables. The Unit concludes with the use of Pythagoras’ Theorem.
How will I be taught?

Mainly in class lessons with integrated exam questions throughout the course. Students will also be given access to Video lessons and through Moodle to further exercises as well as all the lessons in a PowerPoint format. The accent right from the start is familiarity with the way the examining board set questions so that all students are fully prepared for the exam situation. In “The HUB” you will also have computer facilities and worksheets to enhance your learning.
How will I be assessed?

Two exams taken in June, one without a calculator. Throughout the year there will be practice papers taken under exam conditions to give students the opportunity to learn exam “techniques”. From past experience few students have been taught these and is often a reason for previous poor performance.
