The Course
This course has been designed for students over the age of sixteen who wish to obtain a GCSE qualification in Mathematics. Students will be entered for syllabus 3301 SPEC.A intermediate tier, set by the AQA, at intermediate level where grades B to E are obtainable.
A two-year course will again be available this year. At the end of the second year, students will be entered for either the higher or intermediate tier examinations. At the end of year 1, the students may choose to take Key Skills Number qualification at Level 2.
The course will use the textbook "GCSE in a Year - Mathematics" edition by Roger Porkness published by Hodder and Stoughton. It is essential that students purchase this book. There are also self-study units available in the College which can be used to supplement classwork. All students will be expected to have a scientific calculator and its use will be explained in the lectures. The Casio FX82 series meets all the requirements of this course.

5. Using and Applying Mathematics Practical tasks and real life problems.
Assessment/Exams
Two papers, each two hours in length. Both papers test the subject content across the full range of grades available.
Paper 1: non-calculator = 40%
Paper 2: with calculator = 40%
Two pieces of coursework = 20% Set and marked by the examining board.
