Course programme

Who is this course for?

If you are 18 or over, not in full time education and looking for a GCSE Maths qualification, then this course is for you. GCSE Maths is an essential requirement for many A Level and university courses (including PGCE Teaching courses) and is the standard Maths qualification required by colleges and employers. Many people choose to study GCSE Maths before going on to other subjects. Our GCSE Maths course offers you a great mix of important skills, giving you the best opportunity to achieve success that will be valued by colleges, universities and employers. Please note: GCSE Maths is FREE to applicants who do not have a grade C or above. However for those who do have a grade C or above and wish to improve their grade there will be a charge.

What qualifications or experience do I need ?

If you hold a GCSE Maths Grade D, or a Functional Skills Level 2 Maths certificate, you will be able to enrol straight on to the course, following a 30 minute Maths assessment which will determine the best course group for you. If you do not hold a Grade D or Functional Skills Level 2 qualification in Maths, or cannot provide evidence of this, you are still welcome to apply. You will still sit the assessment, but will have to achieve the minimum pass mark to enrol on GCSE Maths.

What will I study ?

The GCSE Maths course packs a lot of learning into one academic year. You will develop your mathematical skills through detailed study of topics including arithmetic, algebra, trigonometry, probability, shape and space, percentages, fractions and other aspects of Maths. We try to make studying GCSE Maths an enjoyable and rewarding experience for everyone and hope that although challenging for many people, the subject is taught in an engaging and interesting way. It is very important that you tell your GCSE Maths lecturer immediately, if you are having difficulties with the course.

How will I be assessed ?

Assessment is through two end of year exams. These exams (usually sat in June), are 1 hour 45 minutes long each and you will be tested on your mathematical skills and knowledge. The first exam is sat without using a calculator; the second exam requires you to use a calculator. In January, your GCSE Maths lecturer will review the work you have completed as well as your attendance record and enter you for either the Higher or Foundation Tier for the summer exam. Students who sit the Foundation Tier can achieve a maximum Grade C. Students who sit the Higher Tier can achieve a maximum Grade A*. The criteria for Tier entry will be explained to you at the start of your course. If you disagree with the Tier you are entered for, there will be an appeals procedure available to you, but the decision made in that procedure will be final.

What qualifications could I achieve ?

Upon successful completion of the course, you will be awarded a qualification in GCSE Maths from the Edexcel Examinations Board.

How do I join the course ?

Please complete an enrolment form when you come to a Part Time Enrolment session at the college. See the 'Will I need an interview' section below for details of what happens when you wish to enrol.

Will I need an interview ?

Yes. It is very important that a trained professional Maths lecturer is able to advise and guide you in your best interests. At your interview session, a member of the Maths team will assist you to enrol straight on to the course if you can show evidence of a D grade or Functional Skills Level 2 certificate, after you have sat an assessment test. If you do not have this evidence, you will still complete the 30 minute assessment test, which will be reviewed by a member of the GCSE Maths team to confirm if you have passed the minimum standard required. This assessment tests your level of ability in Maths. If it emerges that GCSE Maths is not suitable for you, you will be referred to an Adult Functional Skills course to make sure that your Maths improves, making you more ready for the demands of GCSE Maths in the future. The lecturer will usually be able to confirm your enrolment or referral shortly after you have sat the assessment test.

Any extra costs for equipment/materials ?

You will need to purchase copies of the set course texts (these will be announced when you start the course) and provide basic stationery such as A4 lined notepads, pens etc. You will also need to provide a scientific calculator and geometry set including compass, protractor, ruler and set square. The end of year Exam fee is an ADDITIONAL COST unless included in the course fees. Please note: GCSE Maths is FREE to applicants who do not have a grade C or above. However for those who do have a grade C or above and wish to improve their grade there will be a charge.
