MSc Geographic Information Science (GISc)

Introduction

Geographic information science (GISc) is the theory, practice and effective use of technologies such as geographical information systems (GIS) for the description, explanation, and prediction of geographic patterns and processes.

This degree will be ideal if you already have some practical knowledge of one or more of these technologies, but - in order to make informed technological choices - need a deeper understanding of spatial theory, a wider technological knowledge, new perspectives on the social and political context of spatial data and insights into the process of organisational/societal decision-making with spatial data.

As a student, you will work forward from spatial theory, through technical evaluation of modern systems to practical work on implementation strategies in research, professional practice or management situations. The degree is taught via the Internet, to provide lecture/review materials, email to deliver coursework/feedback and an organised Internet chat message board to converse with lecturers and other students.

Teaching

Teaching in Birkbeck makes use of a wide range of techniques suited to varied needs and abilities of its mature students. The teaching environment differs from a conventional lecture, with students much more able to participate in the teaching process.

The GISc programmes are delivered using a combination of evening face-to-face sessions with delivery of materials over the internet.

Special Features

Taught by leading experts in the field of GISc, Birkbeck has over 20 years teaching experience in this field and is renowned as one of the leaders in GIS teaching.

Birkbeck's School of Geography is one of the UK's leading geographical information research centres, hosting multi-million pound GIS projects for several government departments.

Our GISc teaching team is composed of a number of external collaborators, such as researchers, private GISc consultants, and GISc professionals working in private industry and public bodies.

We specialise in part-time degrees. All our courses are tailored for part-time mature students, who want to further develop their knowledge in an area or simply give continuity to their lifelong learning experience.

As part of the University of London, Birkbeck is ranked among the leading UK universities for researching the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences.
