Course programme

In your first year, you will look at issues of climate change and natural disasters, the impact of globalisation and population migration, and how places are rebranded to change their image. Your fieldwork will be on the use and management of coasts.

In your second year, you will extend your understanding of the physical and human worlds through the theme of Contested Planet, which includes topics such as Superpower Geographies, Bridging the Development Gap, Water Conflicts and Energy Security. You will also examine the food supply problem through a research unit investigating Life on the Margins.


  • You must satisfy the general entry criteria for A Level courses, which are based on your GCSE results.
  • In addition, you must achieve at least a grade B and a grade C in at least two written subjects e.g. History, Geography, Humanities, English Literature, Business, Religious Studies (full course), English Language.

International students:

  • Equivalent overseas qualifications will be considered.
  • IELTS 5.5 (with a minimum of 5.0 in each skill) or equivalent.

Assessment is by exam at the end of each year. Successful completion of the first year gains you an AS Level in Geography. Successful completion of the second gains you an A Level.

Taken as one of three A Levels, Geography gives you the opportunity to progress to university or other Higher Education institute. Taken in combination with a Politics or Economics A Level, it's the ideal preparation for studying those topics at Higher level.
