This course surveys classical music in Germany from the twentieth into the twenty first centuries. During this period of huge political turbulence we will look at the importance of music as the nation made and remade itself. Tutor: Edward Henderson [external website].

About this course

- Chart the history of classical music in Germany from C20th to the present day.
- Display a broad understanding of the musical trajectories listed above
- Feel confident undertaking further reading and listening of related works
- Be able to critically engage with music journalism in this field (e.g. concert reviews, composer biographies).

Please bring a notebook and pen.
You may wish to buy some of the music or books recommended in class.

- Maximalism: Mahler’s symphonies
- Expressionism: Schoenberg’s monodrama and the 2nd Viennese School
- Music in the Weimar Republic (Kurt Weill)
- Music in the Third Reich (Richard Strauss)
- Music in post war Germany (Stockhausen)
- Contemporary music in Germany (Lachenmann and Furrer).

The classes will be a mixture of lecturing, listening to music and discussion. Wider reading and research will be suggested but there will not be any compulsory ‘homework’. It is hoped that you will be interested to read a little about these works between classes.
