Course Aims:
This is a course for absolute beginners in the language, no previous knowledge being necessary. This is a 23 week course, previously advertised as basic or holiday language and is designed to whet your appetite and from which you may wish to progress to the next stage.

Course Content:
Starting with introductions, greetings and personal descriptions, it provides a taste of basic language and phrases suitable for use on holiday, out and about or for when you are in contact with a native speaker. The tutor will give an overview of how you can communicate in the most common social situations, how to be both polite and friendly and how to get what you ask for. All topics dealt with briefly in this introduction, from food, shopping, travel and hotels will be dealt with in more thorough detail in later stages but the main aims here are to develop confidence in a language, to explain some of the mystery behind it, to begin to explain the culture and customs of a country and to encourage you to explore further through the variety of resources available to you.

If you 'dabbled' in a language a number of years ago but have forgotten most of what you learned or if you have decided that this is the year you make an effort to speak it when you go on holiday, this could be the ideal course for you.

Progression:
From this course, you can move on to the next stage, known Year 2. If you wish to study the subject further in your own time, there are plenty of sources of information, such as the BBC learning zone, which broadcasts language programmes throughout the year, websites such as which provide general and specialised material and a variety of books and revision guides available in local shops. Your tutor can advise further and may recommend a particular book. This applies to languages at all levels and will be equally relevant if you decide to move onto a higher stage. Bear in mind too that its never too late to start learning.

Exam:
There is a small amount of assessment, simple, user friendly tasks to check your understanding of the subject. You will also produce a small portfolio of classwork, concentrating particularly on listening and speaking skills. The atmosphere is informal and encouraging and it is most important to participate and enjoy. Assessment will be informal and ongoing, an external EV will moderate the work at the end of the year.

OCN level 1- Language units in Listening and Speaking.
