You will learn to identify the parts of a computer and how to access a computer network. You will also learn how to enter information into the computer and save it using Microsoft Office 2010 and Windows 7 software. There will also be an introduction to the internet and the use of email.

About this course

This course is suitable for those who are relatively new to computing or anyone who is still a little nervous about using the computer.

No computer experience is required, but you should have a reasonable command of the English language.

Course programme

How will I learn?

Your tutor will teach you by lecture/discussion and demonstration. You will receive booklets and sample exercises, with one-to-one help as appropriate. Your tutor will also introduce you to Newcastle City Learning’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).

How will my progress be monitored and assessed?

You will be assessed by means of practical tasks done in class and marked by your tutor.

Progression opportunities

A range of ICT courses allow you to build up your skills using Microsoft Office software, the Internet or other aspects of computer use. Your tutor will be able to advise you further.

What equipment or materials will I need to provide?

All materials for your course will be provided by your tutor, but please bring a pen and notepaper as you will probably find it useful to take extra notes. You will also learn how to use a USB drive (memory stick), so you may wish to bring your own.

What other support is available?

Help with numeracy or literacy is available. ICT drop-in sessions are available during term time and are open to all learners. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. Learner Support Funding is available for equipment, childcare and travel to learners who qualify. For further details please ask when enrolling.

Start up and shut down the computer
Health and Safety while using the computer
Using USB keys (memory sticks)
Entering and saving data using Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel or PowerPoint)
Retrieving and printing data
Sending and receiving email
