Our Global Health & Social Medicine BSc offers a unique and exciting course with the opportunity to study abroad for a year and aims to train a new generation of leaders who want to make a difference in the world.

This course is ideal for students seeking to make a difference to improving health and wellbeing, locally and globally, by shaping effective health policies and health care delivery systems. The BSc includes a focus on bioscience, specialising in one of three pathways; ageing, neuroscience or pharmacology.

About this course

All applicants of our full time BSc or BA are eligible for the £9,000 scholarship opportunity, including UK, EU and Overseas students.
We offer excellent opportunities to study social aspects of health and medicine in a multi-disciplinary context with close collaboration between the social sciences, life sciences and biomedicine.

This course equips students for a wide range of career options in the health services, in public health, in government and NGOs in the UK and elsewhere, and in the commercial, medical and health sectors, as well as for future careers in academic research and teaching.

With the job market becoming ever more competitive, it has been reported that King’s offers its graduates the best job prospects of any London or Russell Group university, with an employment rate of 95.2 percent, an increase of 2.6 percent on last year. The data, compiled by The Careers Group, University of London, is based on institutional Employment Performance Indicators (EPI) for full-time, first degree, UK domiciled graduates in work or further study.

Please note that A-level General Studies, Critical Thinking, Thinking Skills and Global Perspectives are not accepted by King's as one of your A-levels. However, if offered the grade achieved may be taken into account when considering whether or not to accept a candidate who has just fallen short of the conditions of their offer.

Course programme

1st Year

Courses are divided into modules. Each year you will normally take modules totalling 120 credits.

Required Modules

You are required to take the following modules:

  • Introduction To Global Health 2 (15 credits)
  • Introduction to Social Medicine 1(15 credits)
  • Introduction to Social Medicine 2 (15 credits )
  • Research Practice & Design Studio (30 credits)

You are also required to select one of the below biomedical pathways to follow throughout your degree from and take 30 credits from that pathway to make up 25% of your first year of study:

Neuroscience pathway

You are required to take the following modules:

  • Cell Biology & Neuroscience (15 credits)
  • Fundamentals of Pharmacology (15 credits)

Pharmacology pathway

You are required to take the following modules:

  • Cell Biology and Neuroscience (15 credits)
  • Fundamentals of Pharmacology (15 credits)

Ageing pathway

You are required to take the following modules:

  • Cell Biology & Neuroscience (15 credits)
  • Genetics & Molecular Biology (15 credits)

2nd Year

3rd Year

Global Health & Social Medicine BSc

If you are studying the three year BSc, you will take the final year modules in your third year.

Required Modules

You are required to study the following modules:

  • Contemporary Crises in Global Health & Social Medicine (15 credits)
  • Dissertation in Global Health & Social Medicine (30 credits)
Optional Modules

In addition you are required to take 30 credits from your chosen biomedical pathway and a further 45 credits from a range of optional modules which may typically include:

  • Social Aspects of Genomics and Personalised Medicine (SAGEP) (15 credits)
  • Ageing: a Global Perspective (15 credits)
  • War, Mental Health & Social Ruptures (15 credits)
  • Ethics of Emerging Biotechnologies (15 credits)
  • Psychiatry, Culture and Globalisation (15 credits)

Global Health & Social Medicine with a Year Abroad BSc

Students on the four year course will spend their third year studying abroad before returning to complete a final year with King’s. This will depend on levels of achievement in second year modules and being accepted by a partner university.
