In recent decades, organisations have become increasingly reliant on effective supply chains in order to compete in the global market. This course equips you with a global view of the strategic and operational processes you need to manage the key functions of these supply chain processes, including transportation, warehousing, inventory management and production planning. We combine advanced theory teaching with practical skills training in well-known software such as SAP®and Arena® to give you a core understanding of the contemporary issues and programs used in global supply chain management.

Those without formal qualifications need to demonstrate relevant work experience and the ability to study at postgraduate level.

Course content

What will you study on MSc Global Supply Chain Management with Integrated Placement (15 months/24 months)?

This course has 5 core supply chain management modules, with the first four ensuring that an in depth understanding of key area such as business strategy, logistics, supply chain management and e-supply chain planning, are achieved as fundamental to your learning. These modules will raise your awareness of the critical issues related to managing international operation and how to solve problems, as well as enhancing your capabilities in sourcing and managing suppliers, and measuring performance. You will also select two optional modules which allow you to tailor your learning to both your interests and personal career plan by focusing on areas such as computer assisted optimisation, lean and sustainable supply chains, project management techniques, and financial analysis for international managers. Finally you will complete the course with a project based on an area of supply chain management of your choice and employing the knowledge you have learnt.

Modules

International Logistics Management (15 Credits) - Compulsory

Logistics is the lifeline of any business, which encompasses all activities from receipt of customer orders to delivery of goods at their doorstep. An organisation could have the highest brand equity, the most desirable products, and the best people but it could still fail if its logistics infrastructure and systems are not adequate. This module aims to provide students with an understanding of all key areas within logistics from an international perspective.

Managing Projects (15 Credits) - Optional (15 Credits) - Optional

This module introduces students from a variety of backgrounds and with different career ambitions to the project management techniques and how they are used across a range of sectors to realise strategic corporate objectives. In particular, the module aims to: - offer a comprehensive account of project management, programme management and project portfolios, based on a combination of scholarly work and professional practice - develop students understanding of strategic project management and systems design processes - outline and develop skills in professional techniques used in project closure and evaluation - introduce and evaluate critical success factors for projects.

Global Supply Chain Project (60 Credits) - Compulsory

This module provides you with a means of developing further the skills and knowledge gained on the MSc Global Supply Chain Management, by application to a specific organisational issue or problem. It enables you to demonstrate proficiency in the design of a business enhancement project, application of appropriate methods of investigation, management of the change process, and maintenance of vision in the face of the vicissitudes of business realities.

Operations and Supply Chain Management (30 credits) - Compulsory

This module provides the student with comprehensive understanding of key principles and techniques of operations and global supply chain management and how organisations match demand with relevant supply. Students will develop critical and analytical insights into current operations and global supply chain management practices, explore the trade-offs and relevant techniques to address ever changing demand and employ knowledge to the design, operate, improve and control of business processes.

Strategic Leadership (15 credits) - Compulsory

This module will inform students of the key developments in, and thinking from, the study of strategy and leadership. The module aims to explore the models, tools and theories used in strategy and leadership and critically appraise where and when such models, tools and theories are effective. The central aim of the module is to achieve a balance between theory and practice and to use strategy and leadership tools to address the complexity and uncertainty facing organisations.

Procurement (15 credits) - Compulsory

The main aim of this module is to develop an understanding of procurement from a strategic, technological, business process and relationship perspective. This module will provide special emphasis towards negotiation and educate participants on various negotiation strategies.

Supply Chain Analytics (15 credits) - Compulsory

This module explores the major concepts, models, tools, and metrics used in management analytics for overseeing management of supply chain management. Specifically, in the first part of the module students will be equipped with building blocks of supply chain analytics. In the second part, the module will provide students with fundamental machine learning concepts and techniques, which are most applicable to management research.

Applied Corporate Finance (15 credits) - Compulsory

The aim of this module is to develop an understanding of the major issues in corporate finance. In particular it develops the student’s ability to analyse corporate finance issues; apply finance theories to deal with practical issues in corporate finance; and investigate emerging issues and contemporary trends in the field.

Enterprise Systems and Supply Chain Planning (15 credits) - Optional

The module aims to introduce the students the role of Enterprise Applications in Supply Chain planning and control processes. Students will not only develop a better understanding of the theory behind these processes, but also gain hands on experience of these processes with SAP© a leading enterprise resource planning software package, resulting in the requisite practical skills as well.

Developing Business Networks for Entrepreneurs (15 credits) - Optional

The aim of this module is to provide students with an understanding of business networks and its contributions to entrepreneurial behaviour. This will allow the student to confidently discover and develop business networks that will enhance their careers.

Innovations Management (15 credits) - Optional

The main aim of the module is to develop a systematic understanding of the role of innovation as a key factor in a dynamic business environment and to equip students with the knowledge, expertise and skills needed to manage the innovation process at both strategic and operational level. The module provides an up-to-date overview of the mainstream theories and models of innovation and illustrates successful organisational practices through case study analysis.

Placement

As part of this course, you can do an optional three month or one year industry placement. Programmes with integral placements give you the opportunity to apply the skills you have learned throughout your studies in a practical environment. You will be earning a full time salary and will learn skills that can't be taught in a classroom at University. During the placement, you will be able to gain further insight into industrial practice that you can take forward into your individual project and into your future career.

You will undertake your placement after completing your taught modules and project. During the placement, you will be assigned an academic supervisor, who will maintain direct contact with you. You will be able to access online materials at the University as well as other physical resources as appropriate. You will maintain a placement log for the day-to-day activities and submit a final report once the placement comes to an end.

Although the placement is not guaranteed, the University maintains links with a wide network of organisations who offer placement opportunities. The University will also provide you with full support to help you secure a placement, from job application to the interview.

In order to qualify for the placement period you must have passed all modules in the semesters preceding the placement.

If we have insufficient numbers of students interested in an optional module, or there are staffing changes which affect the teaching, it may not be offered. If an optional module will not run, we will advise you after the module selection period when numbers are confirmed, or at the earliest time that the programme team make the decision not to run the module, and help you choose an alternative module.
