What will I study?
The key to this subject is study of the underlying concepts and arguments of policies and issues. At AS Level, study involves examining how people participate in the British political process and the key institutions of the UK. At A2 the theme is the political processes and institutions of the USA. The course provides a broad-based background in political theory and practice and will develops skills in analysing and evaluating the current political scene.
Duration:
One year for AS Level and a further year to complete A Level.
Do I need any additional qualifications/ skills?
Open-minded willingness to appreciate the complexity of political concepts is essential to success in this subject. Successful students are eager to read as widely as possible in contemporary materials, looking beyond textbooks to the reality of a continually changing political process.
How will I be assessed?
At AS Level, there are two examinations, one covering People and Politics, one covering Governing the United Kingdom, each of one hour and twenty minutes. At A2, there are two one and a half hour examinations, one covering Representative Processes in the USA, the other covering Governing the USA.
What can I do afterwards?
The course develops a wide range of skills in analysis and the development of concepts. It combines well with Law, History, Economics, Philosophy, Sociology as well as a broad range of other subjects. It provides useful background for a wide variety of degree courses and for those intending to join the armed forces.
Are there any additional costs involved?
There are occasional optional trips to meet examiners, politicians and visit the houses of Parliament. Students are required to buy one specified textbook each year.
