CONTENT OF THE GPVTS / GPST INTERVIEW COURSE

ISC Medical's one-day GPVTS / GPST course is an intense and very interactive course (no more than 12 participants on each course) which will enable you to gain plenty of valuable practice. We run two types of courses:

  • Stage 2 & 3 courses (up to the Stage 2 exam on 6 February 2010).
    Cover all key stages of the GPST/GPVTS selection process, including EMQs & SJTs, role play, group discussions & task prioritisation.
  • Stage 3 courses (after the Stage 2 exam on 6 February 2010).
    Cover Stage 3, with more role play and group discussion practice

STRUCTURE OF THE GPVTS / GPST INTERVIEW COURSE

The course has been specifically structured towards the GP VTS / GP ST recruitment process and deals with all aspects of Stage 2 & Stage 3.

9:00 Registration
A chance for all participants to discuss the GPST/GPVTS recruitment process in formally with others and our trainer. Many candidates choose this time to address any particular personal issues they want to raise and on which they would like to work during the course.

9:30 Introduction to the selection process, essential techniques and review of the competencies
Informal group discussion on what will be awaiting candidates on the day of the assessment. This section offers an excellent opportunity to look and discuss what the examiners will be looking for and how the different skills and competencies will be assessed on the day.

Courses before 6 Feb 10: EMQs, MCQs & Situational Judgement Tests
A chance to discuss stategy to succeed at the Stage 2 exam. At the course, you will practise a variety of SJT scenarios to make sure that are fully confident on the day of the assessment.

Courses after 6 Feb 10: Role play practice
Those attending courses between Stage 2 and Stage 3 will have an opportunity to practice role play earlier in the day

11:00 Role play practice
Everyone gets an opportunity to have a go at a role play and to receive personal feedback both from the group and from our experienced trainers. The feedback sessions are very interactive, allowing all participants to reflect on performance and to discuss how improvements can be implemented.

13:30 Group discussions
Practice group discussions in small groups of 4, under the watchful eye of the trainer. Learn the dynamic of group discussions, then pitfalls to avoid, how to deal with quiet or animated colleagues, and how to maximise your marks.

14:30 Task prioritisation
Interactive workshop where candidates discuss a range of techniques to prioritise series of tasks and justify their decisions. Learn how the examiners mark you and how you can optimise your score.

15:30 Further role play & group discussion practice
A chance for candidates to practice further the role playing skills and group discussion techniques acquired during the day.

Note: All courses before 6 February 2010 (i.e. the Stage 2 exam) will deal with both Stage 2 and Stage 3. All courses after 6 February 2010 will deal with Stage 3 only. The additional time will be devoted to more role play and group discussion practice.

Important ethical and NHS issues will be raised during the course as part of the feedback and discussions on role plays and group exercises. Because each course only has 12 participants, everyone will have plenty of opportunities to practice and to get feedback about their own performance.
