About this course
It aims to empower General Practice Nurses (GPN) to learn the foundational knowledge and skills needed to develop into a confident and competent General Practice Nurse who is an accountable member of the General Practice team. This will include a range of relevant clinical skills and knowledge in general practice nursing, health promotion and screening and the management and assessment of long term conditions.
This work-based, flexible and distributed part-time course is aimed at nurses new to General Practice. You will need to be a qualified registered nurse and hold current professional registration on Part 1 of the Professional Register. You will also need to have evidence of having studied at Level 5.

Year 1 Modules
- Foundational Skills & Knowledge for General Practice Nursing
This course will cover the NHS Cervical Screening Programme. Women’s and men’s health, national immunisations programme and travel care, ear care, wound management as well as an introduction to several long term conditions, monitoring and management including: asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, dementia, cardiovascular disease and hypertension. There is the option of attending additional study days.
Through consultation with other health care professionals and critical learning, you will consider issues relating to leadership, team working, accountability, quality and governance, in order to develop you in your role of the General Practice Nurse.
Covering political issues, NHS strategies and developments in primary care, you will gain invaluable knowledge and understanding of the key issues of your role.
It is delivered as a flexible distributed learning approach at our Uxbridge Campus and High Wycombe Campus.
Our September intake is delivered in either campus, with a flexible approach to the teaching – it is mainly eLearning with four face to face teaching sessions of the main skills, including the NHS cervical screening programme and the national immunisations programme.
The February intake is delivered at our Uxbridge Campus – eLearning delivery with four face to face days as above – and you will also be able to attend optional training sessions at the High Wycombe Campus to supplement the eLearning.
The delivery at the High Wycombe Campus is blending elearning with 12 face to face teaching days of the main skills and long term conditions. You will also have the opportunity of learning in practice with Mentor guidance.
