New for 2016, this degree is designed to train a new generation of professionals, policymakers, government officials and security sector personnel to manage complex health events and their wider social and economic consequences.



The course is an intellectually rigorous and flexible multidisciplinary program of study and research in the field of health security.



Based in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, you can tailor your tertiary experience by drawing upon the expertise of a number of schools and faculties at the University of Sydney, including:



− Faculty of Veterinary Science

− Faculty of Health Sciences

− Faculty of Agriculture and Environment

− School of Social and Political Science

− Sydney Medical School

− School of Nursing

− School of Public Health

− Sydney Law School

− University of Sydney Business School





Informed by the work of the Marie Bashir Institute for Infectious Diseases and Biosecurity at the University of Sydney, the course addresses the challenge of responding to adverse health events from the local to global level. It covers:



− emerging diseases (animal, plant and human)

− laboratory safety and regulation (biosafety)

− biodefence

− quarantine and border control

− agriculture

− synthetic biology



This program works closely with the Marie Bashir Institute , which is committed to meeting the challenge of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases.

Study plan

The Graduate Diploma in Health Security requires the satisfactory completion of 8 units of study (48 credit points) (cp), including:

(a) a minimum of 24 credit points of core units of study; and
(b) a maximum of 24 credit points of core elective units of study


What is a specialisation?

Students will select one of three specialisations within the Master of Health Security.
- Human and Animal Health
- Biodefense and Biosafety
- Agrosecurity (animal and agriculture biosecurity)
