The computer has firmly established itself as an essential tool in graphic design, illustration and visual communication. This four-week intensive course combines a broad grounding in many of the key design software packages commonly used by designers, together with tuition which focuses as much on the idea generation and development process and as on the visual look of the work.

Course programme

Uniquely on this course, though software is central, students develop ideas on paper prior to developing and producing their final designs on the computer. The aim is to enable students to make the computer work for them rather than becoming a slave to its power.

Software covered will include: Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator as well as various current web authoring and digital publishing software.

The structure of the course content progresses from simple exercises and software instruction through to more complex challenges. Each project builds on the last, moving from small format, print-based work (posters, folded leaflets, logotypes and maps) through more digital outcomes, ultimately towards developing designs that can work across various mediums; from downloadable e-books to web pages that will work as effectively on a computer monitor as on a hand held digital device (phones, tablets etc).

Who should take this course?

The course is suitable for students preparing a portfolio for entry to BA or MA courses, as well as for practising designers from the UK or overseas who wish to experiment with new software technologies. No computer knowledge is necessary.

Please note: This course is for students aged 18 and older
