The course is an introduction to graphic design and illustration with strong emphasis on developing creative thinking skills and learning how to generate ideas and outcomes in response to project work that is set on the programme.
The course will also introduce you to a wide range of contemporary practitioners working in the fields of graphic design and illustration and will encourage you to visit exhibitions and events, to deepen your learning. The course will also enable you to put together a portfolio of graphic design or illustration work for interviews for further study or jobs.

There will be group discussions, individual tutorials, lectures, demonstrations and practical activities. With practical art and design courses, it’s always recommended that students develop and build on the skills they have learned in class in their own time.

Course programme

There will be projects exploring typography, logo design, drawing and editorial illustration, postcard/flyer design, packaging design and design for advertising.
If your interests lie in graphic design, projects set during the last few weeks of the course can focus on this. Similarly if your interest lies in illustration, you can work on illustration projects during the latter part of the course.
You will also be introduced to a range of practical techniques and processes that are relevant to the subjects covered. These will include cut and paste, lettering, observational and experimental drawing, painting and collage.

Additional information

You can move on to further study, on short or more sustained courses, towards higher education or towards professional practice. Drawing courses, courses on colour for design, sketch book courses and other broad art courses would also be useful.
