Introduction:
A BTEC National Certificate is a practical, work-related course valued by employers and higher education institutions. You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. As well as learning about the graphic design industry, you will also develop the skills needed to start, or progress a career in this industry. This course is equivalent to two A Levels. It will be taught in specialist facilities at our multi-million pound Park Campus, which is a Centre of Excellence for creative arts.

This two year Part-Time+ course will be held at Preston College, Park Campus, Moor Park Avenue, Preston, PR1 6AP.

Course Content:
You will learn how to develop ideas and produce creative solutions to design assignments. The philosophy of the course is to integrate all activities wherever possible, in order to simulate a commercial design experience.

The unique breadth and depth of this pre-degree programme enables us to enter you for additional advanced qualifications in Art & Design. This allows you to focus exclusively on your Art & Design work for the entire programme.

We will teach you the basic skills necessary to produce professional and visually exciting Graphic Design, including:

  • Illustrations for book jackets, CD covers, and posters.
  • Advertisements for magazines and TV.
  • Packaging designs for real and imaginary products.
  • Exercises and experiments with typography and layout.
  • Corporate stationery and identity.
  • 3D work including model making and construction.


During the course you will:

  • Learn how to research visual references.
  • Learn how to develop ideas and present your artwork to clients.
  • Learn how to use an SLR camera and process images in the darkroom.
  • Have access to Apple Mac computers using industrial quality software (ie Illustrator, Photoshop and PageMaker).
  • Study examples of contemporary graphics and advertising.
  • Study the influence of the major Art movements on Graphic Design.


You will receive personal one-to-one support in your studies and during the second year we will give you individual assistance with your applications to university or employment.

Assessment:
Coursework will be internally assessed and externally moderated. You will also complete a final set test which is externally assessed. You will receive continuous feedback and advice during the course.

Careers & Progression Opportunities:
This course will prepare you for successful entry to university BA degree or HND courses in:

  • Graphic Design.
  • Advertising Design.
  • Typographic Design.
  • Magazine Layout Design.
  • Illustration.
  • Photography.
  • Digital Imaging & Electronic Media.
  • Packaging Design.
  • Animation.


Alternatively, students can seek employment with local agencies and design studios. The course will provide you with commercially saleable Apple Mac skills.

Additional Costs:
You will be asked to contribute £5 per term to cover the costs of computer printing ink. Art materials and equipment costs vary but you should expect to pay about £200 throughout the duration of the course.

How To Apply
You will need to complete a Further Education Application Form. These will be available from mid-May.
Many courses have limited places so please return your application form as soon as possible. Following acceptance of your application, the earliest you may enrol is mid-June.

Part-Time+ Course Benefits
Part-Time+ courses are ideal if you are looking to return to education, change career or progress to higher level studies. Courses last between 11 and 18 hours per week, for a full year and fit in with school hours and holidays. They offer:
