Why should I study Graphic Design at Cardinal Newman College?There are outstanding facilities in our new building - with classrooms and a drop in centre complete with Apple Mac computers and the Creative Suite software package including of Photoshop CS2 and Illustrator. The teachers and support technicians are inspirational and are there to help during lesson time and in free periods. A wide range of enrichment activities take place and there are also (of course) excellent pass rates.
What topics will I study?
Throughout the course you will develop skills in the following:

· An understanding of meaning, function, style, scale, colour and content

· Awareness of intended audience or purpose

· The ability to respond to an issue, concept or idea, working to a brief or need

· An appreciation of the appropriate use of lettering (typography & calligraphy), signs and symbols

· An understanding of a variety of materials and genres

You will also develop a knowledge and understanding of:

· How ideas, feelings and meanings can be conveyed and interpreted in images and artifacts

· Historical and contemporary developments, different styles and genres

· How images and artifacts relate to social, environmental, cultural and/or ethical contexts and to the time and place in which they were created

· Continuity and change in different styles, genres and traditions relevant to Graphic Design

· Working vocabulary and specialist terminology

There is an externally set assignment which will provide you with opportunities to show your personal style and ability to integrate effectively and sensitively the processes, practices and theories developed during the two year course.

Progression
This course provides a sound basis for progression to a wide range of Art & Design degree courses available at local and national higher education institutions. Careers in specific disciplines can be followed such as advertising, multi-media, print & production, graphic design, animation, illustration, fashion promotion, computer graphics, games design, visual display etc. Visits to higher education courses and end of year exhibitions are arranged to help students make informed choices. Portfolio and interview preparation is a fundamental aspect of the second year course.
