Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde was completed in 1909, the same year as his Ninth Symphony. It seems to represent a kind of culmination of both his orchestral compositions, and his life-long engagement with song. We will trace the history of Das Lied’s origins, and Mahler’s particular interest in oriental poetry, from Rückert to Hans Bethge. We will also consider the reception of the piece when it was first performed in 1911, conducted by Mahler’s protege Bruno Walter.
