General InformationRetford College has a proven record in superior hairdressing training.
Students completing the course have a high success rate in gaining employment in local salons and a number of students have started their own businesses.
The hairdressing staff are well trained and have a wide experience of the industry.
A flexible programme of study has been designed which can be adapted to meet the needs of individual students.
Attendance is flexible and can be one year full-time or two years part-time for each level of the course.
Applicants working in industry can attend one day each week.
Aims:
These courses are aimed at individuals who wish either to work as stylists or acquire accreditation for their existing skills. Opportunities resulting from this course can vary from working in a salon to more specialised types of work such as working in television or in education.
Course Content:
The course is designed to cater for all levels of ability. The final NVQ level achieved will depend on the students’ ability and previous experience.
Practical training takes place in the college’s salon where students are instructed in the basic skill of Health and Safety, and customer care. The salon is run as a commercial enterprise and students will gain experience of dealing with members of the public. Work placements are also scheduled into the courses.
Level 1:
This course consist of NVQ Level 1 Hairdressing and ABC Award Creative Hair Styling.
Duration of 36 weeks from September to July, 9.30—4.15 on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.
Course content includes:
- Health & Safety
- Salon Reception
- Development of effective working relationships
- Shampoo & Condition Hair
- Prepare for Hairdressing Services & work areas
- Assist with perms & conditioning services
Level 2:
This course consist of NVQ Level 2 Hairdressing and ABC Award Creative Hair Styling.
Duration of 36 weeks from September to July: 9.30—4.15 on a Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.
Course content includes:
- Health & Safety
- Give clients a positive impression of yourself and your organisation
- Advise and Consult with Clients
- Shampoo & Condition Hair / Sealing
- Cut Hair using basic techniques
- Style, Dress and finish hair using basic techniques
- Change hair colour using basic techniques
- Perm and neutralise hair using basic techniques
- Salon reception
Key skills may be included on your timetable. These include Information Technology, Application of Number, Communication, Working with Others and Improving own Learning.
Videos, demonstrations, visits to shows and competition, all form part of the varied learning programme. All students are advised to undertake a work placement during the course. This is an invaluable part of the course and in the past has enabled students to gain employment. Grants are available subject to individual circumstances. Also there are no course fees for the majority of applicants.
Entry requirements:
There are no formal entry requirements for this course but applicants will require a basic level of Numeracy and communication skills and a keen interest in hairdressing.
School leavers will be required to present their record of achievement at the interview.
