Hairdressing NVQ Level 3

About the course:
This course will give you the opportunity to develop and update your technical skills in advanced colouring, colour correction, hair extension, advanced perming & cutting, and long hair. This course will give you an insight into the financial responsibility of running a business. The necessary skills for this qulification will be learnt through a vareity of situations, in a commerical salon and in theory lessons. It is a practical course, which is underpinned by a theoretical background. Within the course structure there are four areas of assessment. They are; practical observation, oral questioning, assignments/case studies and written test papers. Students will need to pass all four areas of assessment. On compleation, all assessments will be retained in a portfolio and used as evidence to show an external examiner.

Course Content:
The mandatory units which must be covered are to ensure your own actions reduce risks to health and safety, promote additional products or services to clients, provide hairdressing consultation services, create a variety of looks using a combination of cutting techniques. Optional units are develop and enhance your creative hairdressing skills, style and dress hair to achieve a variety of creative looks, style and dress long hair, provide colour correction services, perm hair using a variety of techniques, colour hair using a variety of techniques, the application and maintence of hair extensions, contribute to the financial effectiveness of the business, and contribute to the planning and implementation of promotional activities.

Equipment Requirements:
A full kit is required (approx. £60 and/or a mannequin head (£17.00), and a theory book. You will be required to wear suitable salon wear, which consists of black tunic top, black salon trousers and black salon shoes. Hair for hair extensions will also be required if taking the optional unit of Hair extensions. You will be required to purchase enough hair for two full heads of hair extensions. The cost of the hair is approx. £150. You will also be required to purchase text books. S/NVQ Level 3 Hairdressing with Barbering (By Gilly Ford/Helen Stewart ISBN 0-435-45647-4) is required for this course.

Assessment:
Within the course structure there are four areas of continuous assessment - practical, oral questioning, assignments and a written test paper. On completion, the assessment will be retained in a portfolio and used for evidence for your qualification.

Progression:
Subject to successful completion of the course, you may progress to University, including a variety of Make Up and Hair Design degree courses on offer at Southampton Solent University. Alternatively you can apply for work in hotel salons, on a cruise ship, or even set up your own mobile hairdressing business.

Attendance - One Year, Full Time If you are under 19 at the start of the course, and studying a full time course, there are no tuition / exam fees.If you are over 19, you are liable for tuition / exam fees.
