About this Course

This course is capability based and forms part one of a two year course. Successful completion and development of skills will enable you to progress on to NVQ Level 2 in the second year.



You will learn all aspects of the hairdressing industry and begin to develop your skills on family, friends, peers and tuition heads. This course also has the choice of a November start.

Course programme

What will I study?
• Client consultation
• Shampooing and conditioning
• Styling hair
• Creating a theme based image
• Basic cutting techniques
• Perming and neutralising
• Basic hair colouring techniques
• Salon reception duties
• Health and safety
• Promoting products and services

How will I be assessed?
Practical skills will be assessed in the salon on-going throughout the year. These assignments will be graded Pass, Merit or Distinction. You will also sit online multiple choice exams for each unit and provide a portfolio of evidence.

• You will have the opportunity to attend masterclasses. Workshops will also be available in subjects such as Ear Piercing, Barbering, Nail Art and many others
• You will also be encouraged to take part in educational visits and competitions

What can I progress to?
You can continue upon your chosen pathway of Hairdressing by progressing on the Hairdressing Level 2 NVQ.
