From Haute Couture to Prêt-á-porter

A Paris to Milan Summer Fashion Program

Parsons Paris and Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti Milano

This course is an intensive on-site investigation of the Parisian and Milanese fashion scenes. Current fashion trends are examined and contextualized within a historical study of haute couture and prêt-à-porter, giving students a broad understanding of the distinct fashion cultures in both cities. Guided visits to museums and exhibitions, observation of trends in boutiques and design studios, and lectures by fashion designers and experts will help students discover what makes these fashion capitals unique, as well as the commonalities that define the European fashion industry as a whole. Hands-on studio experiences will reinforce students’ understanding of the creative process in fashion, and enable them to draw parallels to their own cultural heritage, style, and personality.

At the end of their stay in each city, students will produce a visual summary, working individually in the second week and collaboratively in the fourth week; these projects will be informed by documented research collected in sketchbooks, diaries, and photographs. The course is recommended for aspiring fashion designers and for students interested in fashion management, fashion journalism, and cultural trends in fashion.
