Many of the most important challenges of the 21st century arise from health and social care. From an ageing population, persisting health inequalities, the need for evidence-based interventions to specific challenges such as obesity, diabetes and antibiotic resistance.

This means there is an ongoing demand for expertise in a range of fields. These include public health, health management and administration, service commissioning, healthcare research and clinical expertise in nursing, medicine, midwifery, physiotherapy, psychotherapy, occupational therapy, and social work.

Our degree is aimed at students who are interested in health and social care but are undecided about what career to pursue.

Five core themes run through the three years of your study: biology and the body; finding, evaluating and using information and evidence (research); understanding and promoting relationships; health systems, organisation and delivery, and determinants of health & wellbeing. These are revisited in the modules you study and are important for any graduate wishing to pursue a career in health or social care.

In the third year your work placement allows you to get insight into your intended career. You may choose to go into a clinical healthcare setting such as midwifery, radiography or A&E. Or you may opt for a placement in management, public health or social care.
