About this course
You will need to have the equivalent of 4 GCSEs at grade D and/or a BTEC Introductory Diploma in Health & Social Care. A positive attitude to working with people from all walks of life is also required. Entry criteria for mature students can be discussed at interview.

About the course:
This course is a practical, work related course for students wanting a career in Health or Care services providing the minimum requirements to enter the health or care related sector. You will learn by completing projects and assignments, which are based on realistic work place situations and activities. The course introduces you to different care work areas and is an ideal springboard to progress on to more advanced care qualifications. A large section of the course is work experience in an appropriate setting. The course is also complimented by off-site visits and guest speakers. The care industry is a large and expanding area of employment for all levels of staff. There are many career opportunities in the health and social care sector, particularly in Southampton.
Course Content:
The course has two core units:
Unit 1 - Communication and Individual rights within the Health and Social Care sectors
Unit 2 - Individual needs within Health and Social care sectors
A further four units include:
Unit 3 - Vocational experience in health or social setting
Unit 4 - Cultural diversity in health and social care
Unit 5 - Creative and therapeutic activities in health and social care
Unit 6 - Working in the health and social care sectors
It is important to note that work experience is central to the course. You will be able to choose from a wide range of care organisations and care settings, including older people and adults with special needs or disabilities.
Assessment:
There are no exams for this course. Coursework is set and assessed throughout the year.
Progression:
On successful completion of this course, you can progress to the BTEC National Diploma in Health & Social Care (Health Studies), which may enable you to advance to further study at University. Alternatively you may be able to find employment in the care sector, although many professions require additional training and qualifications.

Attendance - One year, full time. If you are under 19 at the start of the course, and studying a full time course, there are no tuition / exam fees.If you are over 19, you are liable for tuition / exam fees.
