What are the entry requirements?
You will need to have any of the following equivalents: A good Level 3 standard of Literacy and Numeracy, related interests and ideally experiences. You will also be required to sit an internal assessment and interview. Induction is taken very seriously at this college. You will follow a five week induction programme where your suitability for the level and type of programme you are hoping to be on will be assessed. Successful completion of the induction period will confirm your place on a course.
After applying you will have an interview to determine which course is suitable for your needs and abilities.
  • Minimum Literacy Level: Level 2

  • Reading: You can read and summarise information by selecting and using different types of documents to obtain relevant information; skim and scan documents to gain a general idea of content and identify the information you need; recognise the writer's intentions and identify the main points, ideas and lines of reasoning; summarise information to suit your purpose. Writing: You can present relevant information in a format that suits your purpose; structure your writing to help readers follow and understand your main points; spell, punctuate and use grammar accurately; construct complex sentences and make your meaning clear.
  • Minimum Numeracy Level: Level 2

  • Interpret information: You can read and understand tables, charts, graphs and diagrams; read and understand numbers used in different ways; estimate amounts and proportions; make accurate observations and select appropriate methods to get the results you need. Carry out calculations: You can carry out calculations involving two or more steps, with numbers of any size, with and without a calculator; work with and convert between fractions, decimals and percentages; convert measurements between systems (e.g. pounds to kilograms); work out areas and volumes; work out dimensions from scale drawings; use proportions and calculate ratios where appropriate; compare sets of data of an appropriate size and use range to describe the spread within sets of data.


What qualification will I receive?
If you are successful in all units you will achieve a BTEC Introductory Certificate in Health & Social Care.

Where can it lead?
Depending on how many units have been completed, successful students may be able to progress to a BTEC First (level 2) course or go directly into employment.

What will I study?
Subjects you can study may include Exploring Local Services, Starting Work in Health and Social Care, Looking After Children, Developing Skills in Health and Social Care and Health and the Environment. You are also given the opportunity to improve your literacy and Numeracy skills via Key Skills lessons and tests.

How will I be taught?
All the units are taught by experienced tutors with professional Health or Social Care backgrounds. A variety of teaching methods are used including, individual study and group work, use of case studies, video, internet access and role play. As evidence of your work you will be required to produce written assignments, booklets, presentations, posters and leaflets. There are also opportunities for you to access appropriate work experience through the College.

How will I be assessed?
The BTEC Introductory Certificate in Health & Social Care course is assessed via assignments. Two assignments are set externally by the awarding body. The units are graded P (pass), M (merit) or D (distinction). Key Skills are assessed separately.

What support is available while I am on the course?
You will have access to a personal tutor to help you throughout the course. The college offers a comprehensive range of student services including learning support, language support and guidance.
