Programme Structure & Content

First & Second Year

First and second year students study core courses in Health Studies, Management, Psychology, Sociology and Elementary Statistics. They take other courses (to gain a total of 240 Scotcat credits by the end of second year) from a wide range of health, and social science subjects.

Third Year

Third year courses are taught at the Medical School, and, as part of its deliberately wide-ranging (broad) structure, introduce students to health related disciplines. Disciplines include social influences on health and illness, health promotion, research methods, epidemiology, and medical statistics.

During third year students are attached to a health or social care agency in the community to gain personal experience of community health issues and an understanding of the roles of health-related community agents.

Teaching & Assessment

The degree is challenging and stimulating since it includes both social and medical sciences. The typical workload in first and second year is four hours class time a day. In third year the contact hours are less and more time is allocated for self-study, and all sessions start at 9.30 to assist mature students with school-aged children.
