Overview
The High Performance Building Engineering (HPBE) MSc is designed for recent graduates and experienced built environment professionals who wish to establish their careers in the emerging field of high performance building design and operation.
The programme is delivered by experts from the world-renowned Building Energy Research Group in the School of Architecture, Building and Civil Engineering at Loughborough University and benefits from its links with the Royal Academy of Engineering Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Building Design at Loughborough University. The course is divided into three main thematic areas addressing the: fundamentals of high performance buildings; simulation and modelling for improved performance and resilience; and closing the performance gap.
Masters students enrolled on the HPBE programme gain a comprehensive understanding of the relevant scientific principles of high performance building throughout the course. This is achieved by a combination of theoretical lectures and hands-on learning involving real-world projects, which is supported by individual and group design work involving context specific building energy modelling and numerical performance analysis.
What Makes this programme different?
Site visits and study tours complement the learning process, allowing students to experience state- of-the-art high-performance buildings; and providing them with the opportunity to discuss the designs, performance characteristics and technologies with the engineers, architects and occupiers of these exemplar buildings. This experiential learning approach helps students to develop a critical awareness of the ‘real world’ challenges and solutions which are emerging at the forefront of contemporary low energy design.
