Overview
Our History BA (Hons) degree has been designed in light of a unique consultation process involving current, recent and prospective students and is taught by a team of historians who have won awards and grants for their teaching excellence.
Our History BA degree spans the period from 1600 to the present, focusing mostly on the modern era. Its subject matter includes Britain and mainland Europe, but extends further afield to North America, the British Empire, Soviet Russia, South Asia and China. It begins with broad survey courses, proceeds with the history of individual countries or themes and culminates in specialist case studies. The History degree includes a unique field trip in the first year which in recent years has been to Berlin, the cost of which is included in your normal tuition fees. You can also choose to study a foreign language as part of our History degree.

This year provides you with a strong grounding in historical topics and approaches. Course modules include surveys of modern European, Atlantic and world history, as well as training in skills and methods. Accompanying every lecture module are small-group seminars in which you can discuss your ideas and present findings. Assessment is carried out using standard essays and exams, as well as video presentations, group projects, seminar diaries and short papers. The overseas fieldtrip to Berlin will provide the opportunity to study the interaction between the past and the present on location.

This course offers an opportunity to study history 'on location'. It provides personal experience of the relationship between a locality and national and global history, as well as giving students the opportunity to study modern urban development, the spatial and temporal dimensions of history, and the significance of sites of historical memory

This module provides an introduction to modern European history from c.1750 to the present and to the major ideological families that have defined, and continue to shape, European political, cultural, and intellectual life.

The Atlantic World

This module introduces students to the concept of the 'Atlantic World', surveys the early modern history of Africa, the Americas and Western Europe, and explores the key historical themes of this period including race, religion and empire.

The Making and Unmaking of the World Order Core

The Making and Unmaking of the World Order

This module introduces students to the main currents of world history and to the shifting structure of the international order in the modern period. It aims to cover both the mainstream narratives and those critical of Eurocentrism, thereby stimulating an appreciation in cultural diversity

This module establishes a foundation about the nature of History as a subject area.

Year 2 enables you to choose areas of modern history in which to specialise. You can acquire detailed knowledge and understanding of Britain, France, Germany, China, South Asia, Russia, Cold War Europe and North America. Each of these modules develops your skills in primary source analysis and scholarly research. During this year you will be coached for your final year of study by taking a dissertation preparation module.

In this year, you will have the opportunity to study modules from a range of subjects including Business, Economics, English, Languages, History, Geography and Social Sciences. There will also be an alternative option to study abroad for the second semester - if you choose this route (instead of the standard route) you will undertake assessed work and complete a Distance Learning Research Design module, plus select from a range of optional modules.

The Final year is all about in-depth research. All students write a 12,000-word dissertation on a topic of their choosing. You will also choose options that are based on the current research projects of the history staff. These include the Beatles and sixties Britain, the rise of Nazism, Jim Crow America, the British Empire, and the visual culture of the Soviet Union.

In the final year, you will have the opportunity to study modules from a range of subjects including Business, Economics, English, Languages, History, Geography and Social Sciences.

To enable students to undertake an extensive piece of research on a topic of their choice in the field of their degree title, and to further develop their skills in research techniques and methods.

This module introduces students to the events of 1968 around the world and will examine the claim that they represented a 'world revolution' in that movements of rebellion in all the major centres were united by three things: rejection of the USSR, rejection of the USA and rejection of the 'Old Left'.

This course examines the emergence, evolution and contemporary existence of South Asia (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal) since 1945. It explores the moments of incorporation, trajectories of development and marginal spaces, apart from the mainstream of South Asia today.
