WHAT WILL I LEARN?
CONTENT
The 2 Modules are:
F962 (Period Study) From AUTOCRACY TO COMMUNISM: RUSSIA 1894 1941 Nicholas II to Stalin

F963 (Document Study) ENGLAND AND A NEW CENTURY, 1900 1924 Political parties, World War One, suffragettes, welfare reforms, Ireland

AS ASSESSMENT
Unit F962 examination (1 hour 30 minutes): answer two essay question from a choice of three (June) (50% AS; 25% ADVANCED)

Unit F963 examination (1hour 30 minutes): answer one two-part structured question on a set of four extracts (June) (50% AS; 25% ADVANCED)

A2 CONTENT
The 2 Modules are:

F965 (Historical Interpretations and Investigations) i.e. Coursework

Interpretation : GLADSTONE AND DISRAELI, 1865-1886 This is an analysis of historians interpretations, up to 2,000 words. Questions and extracts provided by OCR

Investigations : A linked, personal choice investigation, up to 2,000 words using OCR questions or question stems

F966 (Themes in History) RUSSIA AND ITS RULERS, 1855-1964. (Autocracy/dictatorship, social/economic impact of governments, opposition, impact of war and revolution)

A2 ASSESSMENT
Unit F965 Coursework is internally marked and externally moderated. (Completed by Easter) (20% ADVANCED)

Unit F966 examination (2 hours); answer two essays from a choice of three (June). (30% ADVANCED)

HOW WILL I STUDY?
There will be a variety of learning styles: whole class tuition, small group work and individual research. There will be note-taking, discussions/debates, student presentations, IT work, audio and video/DVDs. There will also be the chance to hear visiting speakers and attend student conferences. You will have the opportunity to develop your Key Skills in Communication, level 3. The subject is well-resourced, especially with books. You will be expected to do some personal reading and generally to take responsibility for your own learning, although guidance and help are always available.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
As part of an Advanced level programme, you will need a minimum of 5 G.C.S.E.s at grade C or above in at least 4 different subjects, including English Language. No previous qualification in History is necessary, just an interest in the subject. As there is a considerable amount of written work and reading, you need to be able to use English clearly and accurately so you should have attained at least GCSE grade C (or equivalent) in English Language.

LENGTH OF COURSE
â€-AS†level is taken in one year, followed by a second year for the full Advanced (A2) level

WHERE NEXT?
By studying History, you gain many valuable and transferable skills, as well as developing your understanding of the emergence of the contemporary world. Students who have taken A level History have gone on to university to study a wide range of subjects (not just History) and/or have entered such careers as accountancy, law, the civil service, librarianship, teaching, commercial and administrative work.
