History of Art

Course Information

Review the contribution of various artistic styles over time and the wealth of art works available now. Revel in the luxury of the experience. See life through the artists eye in this revealing course.

What will I Learn?

The tutor will explore how artistic approaches and styles have developed over time. Art works from different artists and periods will be considered. The course is liberally illustrated with sample artworks which illustrate styles and periods. Styles of art also varies from country to country and samples will be chosen from all over the world to demonstrate this. The course begins with early 14th and 15th century paintings illustrating how perspective develops over time. How different media affect the appearance of the artwork will be considered and illustrated along with their advantages and disadvantages.

The following artistsâ€TM and sculptorsâ€TM work will be included (and lots more besides):

Constable, Turner, Van Gogh, Holbein, Dürer, Pisarro, Michelangelo, Picasso, Henry Moore.

Assessment and Accreditation

Assessment will take place during the course as well as developing a portfolio of evidence. No exams are involved. OCN certificates at levels 2 and 3 can be achieved. This course provides a sound foundation for those wishing to study art in higher education.
