WHAT'S IT ALL ABOUT?
You will study on a part time modular course requiring attendance for two evenings a week over two years. The programme of study is multidisciplinary in approach and is concerned with the education and care of children from birth to sixteen years within the context of their family, culture and community.

The course provides an opportunity for professional development for those working in a wide range of early years settings. It aims to provide in terms of knowledge, understanding and skills a foundation for a range of careers in child care and education professions. It will provide specialised studies directly relevant to individual vocations and professions in which students are working or intend to seek employment. You will need to obtain either a paid or voluntary work placement in a childcare setting in order to complete this course.

WHAT DO I NEED?
ASSESSMENT
Each module is assessed individually, based on the achievement of a set of learning outcomes. Assessment will be continuous and take a variety of forms including written assignments, seminar presentations, observations, peer and self-assessment. Assessments will take place both in the college and work environment.

WHAT WILL I ACHIEVE?
Successful students are awarded a HNC in Advanced Practice in Work with Children and Families.

WHAT ARE MY COMMITMENTS?
You will need to attend classes every Tuesday and Thursday evening from 6.30pm - 9.30 pm. In addition you will need to spend 4 to 6 hours per week on coursework at home or in college.

WHAT WILL IT COST ME?
3c909-09 Course fees 1200 16-18 year olds, 1200(1200) 19 years and over

Course fees are payable on enrolment. Costs shown in brackets are for those on income-based benefits. Refunds are not normally available.

WHAT ADDITIONAL COSTS ARE THERE?
Funding may be available towards the costs of the course, including course fees (subject to eligibility) - this will be discussed at interview.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?
The course comprises core and option modules:

Core modules (six)

Professional Practice
Theories of Development - Birth to three
Early Years Curriculum, Play and Learning
Continuing Development
Communicating,Values and Leadership in an Early Years Environment
Child Protection

Option modules (four)

There are a wide range of option modules which can be chosen by the college including:

Theories of Development - Three plus
Pedagogic Issues
Developing Play in early years
Managing the Early Years Curriculum
Working with Families
Health Promotion for Early Years Practitioners
Effective Leadership
Understanding Children's Behaviour
Effective Resource Management
Promoting language development

The course will further opportunities for students to develop skills and personal qualities of general importance and applicability in all aspects of working life.

WHAT CAN I DO AFTERWARDS?
Following completion of the course, learners may seek a range of career options including Management or Administration posts in a range of early years settings, Child care advisory roles, Link / Co-ordinator roles in early years work, research, and further professional development for health visitors, midwives, qualified nurses, social workers and teachers leading to a degree or post graduate diploma/certificate in a relevant field.

WHAT DO I NEED?
The course is intended primarily for those who are in, or plan to enter employment in an early years setting, and who have reached the minimum age of 18.
Students will generally have achieved an Advanced GNVQ qualification Merit or Distinction Level, or a BTEC National Certificate/Diploma at Merit or Distinction Level, or an NVQ Level 3 in Early Years (CCLD), or at least one GCE A level or A/S level equivalent with appropriate supporting passes at GCSE grades A, B or C, or supporting BTEC First Certificate or Diploma.
Mature candidates will need to have appropriate work experience, and be able to benefit from the course and achieve the required standard.
You will need an informal interview with the tutor prior to enrolment which will be arranged on receipt of your completed application.
