This is a new award which has built into the content the necessary National Occupational Standards for registration as an exercise practitioner. The first year of study follows an industry tried and tested programme, HNC Fitness, Health and Exercise. The second year of study builds upon these foundations to specialise more on Sports Science skills such as Analysis of Performance and Skill.

KEY FEATURES
This is a new award which has built into the content the necessary National Occupational Standards for registration as an exercise practitioner. The first year of study follows an industry tried and tested programme, HNC Fitness, Health and Exercise.
The second year of study builds upon these foundations to specialise more on Sports Science skills such as Analysis of Performance and Skill Acquisition Techniques, investigates funding streams to support talented athletes and introduces advanced techniques such as Strength training and Motion Analysis.
OTHER INFORMATION
Learners will be given the opportunity to attain formal awards from governing bodies such as Sports First Aid, SVQ Level 2 Instructing Exercise and Fitness (Gym or Exercise with Music based).
Furthermore, using the colleges` extensive workplace links, learners will gain vocational experiences supporting events such as the UK Asian Football competition and the Men?s Health 10k event.
COURSE CONTENT
A selection of core units includes:
Exercise Physiology and Anatomy; Exercise Principles and Programming; First Aid for Sport; Nutrition; Health Screening; Psychology in Sport, Fitness testing in Sport.
In year two, more specialist Applied Sports Science units such as Supporting Talented Athletes; Skill Acquisition; Advanced Fitness Testing and Analysis of Performance will be covered.
A selection of optional units includes:

Body Massage; Stretch Training; Managing Stress; Working as an Exercise Professional in Europe.

PROGRESSION
Learners may progress to degree level programmes in sports science related areas. Strathclyde University, the University of the West of Scotland, Napier University, Stirling University and Queen Margaret University College all provide progression opportunities within Scotland.
Employment opportunities are available within National Governing Bodies (NGBs), professional sporting organisations, local sports development initiatives or as a self employed trainer specialising in competitive sports development.
