KEY FEATURES
The framework and content of this course has been revamped to improve not only the currency of the award but to be more sympathetic to the demands and expectations of the sector employers. The course will develop all aspects of exercise prescription and delivery methods for the broadest spectrum of health, fitness and leisure environments. Competencies will include a sound knowledge of the body structure and function, exercise and therapy techniques, nutrition, first aid and health and safety legislation.
OTHER INFORMATION
Learners will be given the opportunity to gain formal awards from governing bodies such as Fitness Scotland and Health and Safety Executive (HSE). In addition there are numerous opportunities to gain vocational experience by utilising the Departments links with National Governing Bodies, Sport Scotland and employers.
COURSE CONTENT
A selection of core units includes:
Exercise Physiology and Anatomy; Exercise Principles and Programming; First Aid for Sport; Health and Safety Legislation; Nutrition; Health Screening; Applied Exercise Prescription; Getting Started in Business.
A selection of optional units includes:
Sports Massage Techniques; Managing Stress; Current Exercise Trends; Event Management; Psychology of Sports Coaching; Assisting Sports for Disability.

PROGRESSION
Learners may progress to degree level programmes in related areas at Strathclyde, Caledonian and Stirling Universities. Advanced entry to year 3 BSc (Hons) Sports Studies at the University of the West of Scotland, Dundee, Abertay and Napier Universities is also possible. Employment opportunities exist within sports clubs, private and public sports facilities, local authorities and government health and sport initiatives such as Active Schools.
