KEY FEATURES
This course aims to provide a broad based qualification on which to build a professional career in the diverse and dynamic legal services sector. It provides the knowledge, vocational skills and professional attributes appropriate to employment within the legal sector. Emphasis is on assessment by case study and practical exercise. Candidates will also have the opportunity to undertake a Professional Legal Skills Unit which will focus on client interviewing techniques and will also have the offer of non compulsory evening classes covering such subjects as Criminology; Forensic Medicine and Science and Medical Law. It is hoped that candidates in second year will be undertaking work based placement with a leading Glasgow law firm from August 2010.

A selection of core units includes:
Commercial Law; Scottish Legal System; Scots Private Law; Property Law; Communication; Ethics & Cash Handling; Legal Research Techniques; Sheriff Court Civil Procedure; Scottish Criminal Procedure; Scottish Criminal Law; Sheriff Court Divorce Procedure; Conveyancing; Executry Law & Practice; Accounting & Tax for Executries; Consumer Law; Employment Law; Legal Aid in Scotland; and Company Law.

NOTE:
Applicants who achieve 3 Higher Grade passes may be able to access the Diploma of Higher Education in Business.

PROGRESSION
Successful learners can pursue careers with solicitors? firms as Paralegals, the Scottish Legal Aid Board, Police Service, Scottish Courts Service, legal departments in local authorities and organisations in the financial sector. Various universities will consider applications from successful learners. The degree courses which can be applied for entry beyond 1st year include: BA Law (the University of the West of Scotland) and BA Business Law (Napier University). Many learners attaining good grades undertake LLB degrees with the University of Strathclyde, The University of Glasgow and Dundee University.

Requirement
Two Higher Grade passes at grade C or above, including English (alternatively, Modern Studies, History or Economics may be accepted) and two other passes at Standard Grade (or equivalent) at band 3 or above; or completion of a National Qualification including Communication 4 and appropriate subject modules. NOTE: Applicants who achieve 3 Higher Grade passes may be able to access the Diploma of Higher Education in Business.
