Horse Management - BTEC Level 3 National Award
This course is designed to develop a range of real skills, techniques, knowledge, personal qualities and attitudes essential for success in a working life with horses.

What does the course involve?
This exciting course is suitable for those with existing knowledge of, or experience with horses, although it is not essential to own your own horse. You will have the opportunity to work in a practical setting, acquiring an industry recognised qualification that will enable you to turn a real interest into a career or higher education pathway.

You will study a variety of different topics in considerable detail - even if you already feel competent in some areas you can be sure that there will be a great deal more to learn and to gain from this course. Previous experience is taken into consideration and will enable you to work at your own level.

The course is taught predominantly from a private yard which houses a variety of horses: ex-racehorses, eventers and show jumpers as well as Shetland ponies. There will also be a number of excellent trips and visits throughout the course.

If you are considering either a career in the equine sector or a related higher education pathway, then this course will be of great value. Students are able to study this practical subject alongside other subjects, and it provides the equivalent of one A Level.

What will I study?
Stable Skills/Horse Husbandry: This unit will allow you to learn the skills involved in day-to-day horse care as well as the management of a stable yard to required industry standards. This will include working horses from the ground, achieving professional turn out, clothing and equipment, presenting horses for different disciplines and stable yard construction and management.

Animal Biology: Learn about the structure and function of the body, including cells and organelles, tissue, the skeleton, sensory organs and much more. All elements will be explicitly related to the live horse and will explain why we manage these complex animals in the way that we do.

Anatomy and Physiology: This unit covers the structure and function of the main bodily systems and relates directly to the way we look after horses. For instance, do you know how large a horse's heart is? What is tidal flow? Could you say how many bones there are in the horse skeleton? This unit will provide the answers.

Practical equitation: Although we will not teach you how to ride, you will study the theory of practical equitation and may opt to be assessed for your riding skills through external assessment by arrangement with the course tutor.

Racing Industry: This unit will teach you about the racing industry which employs a huge number of staff and offers many opportunities across a broad range of areas and roles.
