The Level 3 90 Credit Diploma

9 Units (90 Credits)

*  Units subject to change

Understand and Promote Equine Health

Students will be able to recognise the signs of good and ill health in horses and evaluate these as indicators of health status.  The learner will carry out health checks on animals and produce animal health plans.

The structure and role of pathogenic organisms will be examined and prevention and treatment of a range of diseases and disorders explored.  The learner will be able to carry out routine and non-routine treatments for animals.

Throughout this unit, learners will gain an in-depth knowledge of many animal health practices and the theory behind them, such as health checking, common diseases and disorders, the immune system and how it works, treating diseases and keeping animal health records.

Working Horses from the Ground

Non-ridden exercise is a key element in the training of all horses and is an essential component of preparing horses to be ridden, their ongoing education and rehabilitation from injury.  This unit will equip students with both the practical ability to work horses from the ground and an understanding of the principles of ground schooling techniques and aims.

Working Horses from the Ground will investigate a range of techniques, including lungeing, long reining and loose schooling.  The unit will help learners to gain an understanding of and apply and evaluate the value of these methods.  Learners will be able to recognise the ways different horses move and perform when being worked from the ground.

Prepare and Provide Care for Competition Horses

The primary use of horses today is competition.  The need for grooms to have a sound knowledge of the increasing variety of athletic equine events is greater than ever.  Those employed in the horse care industry need to be practical and have a sound knowledge of the disciplines they are working in.  They must show a sympathetic and consistent approach to the horses in their care.

This unit provides the knowledge and skills required to work in the competition sector.  Legal requirements and health and safety will be highlighted during delivery of the unit.

Riding and Exercising Horses

Within this unit learners will be able to demonstrate a safe riding technique on the flat.  They will show an ability to ride with an independent seat on a variety of trained horses in a school environment to an acceptable industry standard.  Learners will also show their ability to critically evaluate and reflect on their performance.

Students will be able to demonstrate a safe riding technique whilst carrying out gymnastic jumping exercises and over a small course of fences.  They will show their ability to ride with a balanced position between and over fences on a variety of trained horses.  Learners will also show their ability to critically evaluate and reflect on their performances.

Understand the Principles of Equitation

This unit provides the underpinning theory required to complement the practical horse riding units and the background knowledge needed by those seeking employment within the equine industry.

Learners will review techniques used to exercise horses from the ground.  They will identify the methods and equipment used and the safety requirements ofr horse and rider, and develop a knowledge of a variety of techniques, through planning and evaluating the methods used for ground  schooling in a variety of situations.

Students will look at the techniques used for riding horses on the flat and over fences.  They will explore the equipment used within each discipline and investigate the terminology and training methodology of these disciplines.

Business Management in the Land-based Sector

The successful operation of all land-based industries depends on staff having a working knowledge of the business environment  and market place, while performing their duties in a professional, responsible manner.  This is particularly important for the large number of small and medium-sized enterprises that operate in the environment  and land-based sector.

Learners will discover the range of businesses directly involved in producing goods or providing services  and ancillary businesses and organisations that support the industry.  They will then explore how a range of physical and human resources are necessary for successful business operation and how their management can result in improved business performance.

Undertake an Investigative Project in the Land-based Sector

Learners will plan for the investigative project study by researching a chosen topic area and produce a breakdown of resources and a project action plan.  Health and safety will be considered throughout and learners will carry out a risk assessment before starting their project.

Students will implement, carry out and complete their investigative project.  They all work towards and monitor the project performance.  Learners will prepare an evaluation report that will look at how the project performed, if the schedule plan met the project aims and objectives, and how improvements could be made in the future.

Select, Fit and Evaluate Horse Track and Equipment

The unit covers the tack, equipment and horse clothing commonly used in stable yards.  Learners will demonstrate how to apply, fit and maintain tack and equipment for a range of horses.  They will also select and fit clothing for a range of purposes and situations.

Undertake Stable and Yard Management

The equine industry has expanded rapidly in recent years with a greater number of people now employed working with horses.  It is a diverse industry with many different jobs available, but the horse is central to them all.  The industry needs people who have the essential knowledge, understanding and skills needed to care for horses effectively.

This unit covers the knowledge and skills required to maintain a stable and yard and care for horses safely, efficiently and effectively.  Learners will develop skills that can be transferred to a variety of equine environments and the unit encourages a flexible response to changing circumstances within the industry.

Understand the Principles of Animal Biology

The focus of this unit is on the concepts of structure and function in the animal body.  The unit also covers how these biological systems have evolved, allowing animals to adapt to their environment.

Learners will be introduced to important aspects of cell biology, explore how the structure of tissues relates to their functions within the body and investigate components and functions of the animal skeleton and how skeletel systems have adapted to the environment in which the animal lives.

Students will also study animal senses and the sensory organs of selected animal species.  They will examine the structure and function of the sensory organs in relation to how the animal interacts with its external environment.
