What modules are covered?
Core Modules (subject to change):
Select, Fit and Evaluate Horse Tack and Equipment
The unit covers the tack, equipment and horse clothing commonly used in stable yards. Learners will demonstrate how to apply, fit and maintain tack and equipment for a range of horses. They will also select and fit clothing for a range of purposes and situations.
Undertake and Review Work Related Experience in the Landbased Industries
In this unit learners will develop important knowledge and skills that relate to employment in the landbased sector. Learners benefit from experience of the type of work that they hope to do and an idea of the expectations of those who may employ them.
Students are also given the opportunity to reflect on their personal experience and identify further training needs and possible employment opportunities.
Business Management in the Landbased Sector
The successful operation of all land-based industries depends on staff having a working knowledge of the business environment and marketplace, while performing their duties in a professional, responsible manner. This is particularly important for the large number of small and medium-sized enterprises that operate in the environment and land-based sector.
Learners will discover the range of businesses directly involved in producing goods or providing services, and ancillary businesses and organisations that support the industry. They will then explore how a range of physical and human resources are necessary for successful business operation and how their management can result in improved business performance.
Understand the Principles of Animal Biology
The focus of this unit is on the concepts of structure and function in the animal body. The unit also covers how these biological systems have evolved, allowing animals to adapt to their environment.
Learners will be introduced to important aspects of cell biology, explore how the structure of
tissues relates to their functions within the body and investigate components and functions of the animal skeleton and how skeletal systems have adapted to the environment in which the animal lives.
Students will also study animal senses and the sensory organs of selected animal species. They will examine the structure and function of the sensory organs in relation to how the animal interacts with its external environment.
Understand Anatomy and Physiology
This unit gives an overview of some of the main anatomical and physiological systems, their regulation and control and how these systems have adapted to the animal’s environment.
Understand Anatomy and Physiology covers the main body systems, organ structure and function and hormonal control of reproduction. Students will also learn about biological control mechanisms, the internal regulation of the body and the interaction between the animal body and its external environment.
Understand and Promote Equine Health
Students will be able to recognise the signs of good and ill health in horses and evaluate these as indictors of health status. The learner will carry out health checks on animals and produce animal health plans. The structure and role of pathogenic organisms will be examined and prevention and treatment of a range of diseases and disorders explored. The learner will be able to carry out routine and non-routine treatments for animals.
Throughout this unit, learners will gain an in-depth knowledge of many animal health practices and the theory behind them, such as health checking, common diseases and disorders, the immune system and how it works, treating disease and keeping animal health records.
Contribute to Managing an Equine Event
Equine events are becoming an increasingly popular pastime for horse enthusiasts and people interested in countryside pursuits, and having staff who are suitably trained and informed to run these events is becoming increasingly crucial. This unit covers the detailed and different aspects of planning, running and assessing equine events.
Understand the Principles of Horse Behaviour and Welfare
This unit focuses on developing knowledge and understanding of horse behaviour and welfare of horses, through learners investigating natural behaviour and lifestyles resulting from the evolutionary process, and comparing this to the typical, traditional domesticated scenario. Students will analyse the associated effects of domestication, including stereotypic behaviours.
Alternative contemporary methods of managing and keeping horses are reviewed and the role these methods might play within different realistic scenarios is evaluated.
Undertake an Investigative Project in the Landbased Sector
Learners will plan for their investigative project study by researching a chosen topic area and produce a breakdown of resources and a project action plan. Health and safety will be considered throughout and learners will carry out a risk assessment before starting their project.
Students will implement, carry out and complete their investigative project. They will work towards deadlines and monitor the project performance. Learners will prepare an evaluative report that will look at how the project performed, if the schedule plan met the project aims and objectives, and how improvements could be made in the future.
Understand and Apply the Principles of Horse Fitness
The effective management of horse fitness is an essential skill for all managers of horses in competitive environments.
Horse managers need to know and understand the requirements for the effective fitness and training of horses in their care, and to be able to plan and evaluate fitness programmes. This unit gives learners the knowledge to manage the horses in their care appropriately.
Plan and Monitor Animal Feeding
With animal nutrition being at the forefront of media concerns over welfare, for example issues such as obesity, it is very important for those working in the equine industry to know the correct way to feed a variety of horses.
Prepare and Provide Care for Competition Horses
The primary use of horses today is for competition. The need for grooms to have a sound knowledge of the increasing variety of athletic equine events is greater than ever. Those employed in the horse care industry need to be practical and have a sound knowledge of the disciplines they are working in. They must show a sympathetic and consistent approach to the horses in their care.
This unit provides the knowledge and skills required to work in the competition sector. Legal requirements and health and safety will be highlighted during delivery of the unit.
As leaders in the field of equine training, we have the facilities to offer modules that allow you to focus on a specialist route throughout your course. These are: Equitation (Flatwork and Jumping); Stud and Young Stock Management; Equine Rehabilitation and Theory; Equitation Teaching; Horseracing (Racing Industry, Thoroughbred Training, Racecourse and Race Trainer Visits, industrial placement in the racing industry) and Estate Skills
