Who is this course for?

What are the entry requirements?
You will need at least 5 GCSE grades A*-C (including grade B or above in Biology). In addition, as part of the interview process, you may be required to sit subject specific, English and maths assessments.
After applying you will have an interview to determine which course is suitable for your needs and abilities.

Minimum Numeracy Level: Level 2

Interpret information: You can read and understand tables, charts, graphs and diagrams; read and understand numbers used in different ways; estimate amounts and proportions; make accurate observations and select appropriate methods to get the results you need. Carry out calculations: You can carry out calculations involving two or more steps, with numbers of any size, with and without a calculator; work with and convert between fractions, decimals and percentages; convert measurements between systems (e.g. pounds to kilograms); work out areas and volumes; work out dimensions from scale drawings; use proportions and calculate ratios where appropriate; compare sets of data of an appropriate size and use range to describe the spread within sets of data.

What qualification will I receive?
AS Level in Human Biology.

Where can it lead?
This course can lead to progression in studying Human Biology at A2 Level (2nd year of A Level). It will also count towards your UCAS points.

What will I study?
You will study the human body and its diseases as well as the origins of humans and their adaptations. This will include:

Unit 1: The Body and its Diseases

a. We are what we eat
b. Enzymes and enzyme action
c. Cystic fibrosis - just one small change in a protein
d. Micro-organisms use us for food, shelter and their reproduction
e. How the body fights infectious disease
f. Some diseases are closely linked to life-style

Unit 2: Humans - their origins and adaptations

a. Nucleic acids - keys of life
b. The information of life
c. Cell division - growth, repair, reproduction and cancer
d. Adaptations to a way of life
e. Where we fit in the world and how we came to be here
f. We have changed and are changing our environment.

Unit 3: Centre assessed unit - Practical skills

a. Selecting appropriate qualitative and quantitative methods
b. Working methodically and safely, demonstrating competence in the required manipulative skills and efficiency in managing time
c. Processing and analysing collected data and applying scientific knowledge to explain these conclusions
d. Identifying limitations of materials, apparatus and procedures and suggesting modifications to overcome them.

How will I be taught?
You will learn through lectures, classwork, laboratory work, individual tutorials as well as personal study.

How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed through a series of examinations and practical work.
