This day course will explore the life and plays of Ibsen, considering his influence, concerns and the style and dramatic effectiveness of his plays. We will read, discuss and view, where possible, extracts from A Doll's House,
Hedda Gabler and Ghosts.

Appreciate Ibsen's contribution to Naturalism in the theatre
Analyse the plays both as literary and performance texts
Understand the progressive portrayal of women in three plays.

You will be given extracts from the plays to be discussed.

Ibsen's contribution to naturalism in the theatre
His portrayal of women in his plays in their social and historical context
sub-text, imagery and characterisation
the 'page to stage' process and performance analysis.

It would be helpful if you could read the three plays in advance of the class The teaching and learning methods will include a mixture of small and whole group discussion with some tutor introduction and the viewing of extracts from film versions of the plays.
