Course programme

In recent years there have been a lot of media coverage and debate about the incidence and prevalence of child abuse and our responsibilities to protect children and young people. Most people working with children and young people will have attended a course outlining their roles and responsibilities with regard to protecting children and implementing their own agency's child protection procedures. This course follows on from there to explore the issues and consequences for young people who have experienced abuse and/or neglect in their lives. It is important that we all consider how to react and respond to abused young people, as trusted and responsible adults have a major role to play in the recovery process.

The course covers:

  • acknowledgement of the range of feelings raised by child abuse
  • the definitions of abuse and neglect
  • the impact of these actions on young people including the message they have received
  • the long-term consequences of abuse
  • helpful ways to respond to young people
  • issues of survival and recovery.

The course will draw upon practice, research and theory. Above all, it will enable participants to reflect upon their experience and build on their own strengths. It will be set within an anti-discriminatory framework. It will include inputs by the trainer, small and large group discussions, participative activities and exercises.

Cost
The fees include all costs including travel and standard materials (each course has a full pack of handouts). They do not cover trainers' overnight accommodation (if required) or the cost of training packs that Young People in Focus sells commercially such as ESCAPE, Wavelength, or Working with Young People.
