Overview
Infectious diseases are responsible for one third of deaths world-wide. Intensive research has led to the development of antiviral drugs that effectively treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis C virus as well as vaccines that prevent many infections. However, viruses such as Ebola virus, Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV), and Zika virus are constantly emerging and do not have antiviral drugs or a vaccine that target them.
The immune system protects the host from pathogens. When it is dysregulated, numerous pathologies can develop. Recent advances in molecular and cellular immunology have led to exciting new cancer and autoimmune disease treatments.
In the Intercalated BSc in Infectious Diseases & Immunobiology programme, you will explore how viruses and other pathogens replicate and cause disease, how the immune response is controlled, and how this knowledge can be used to develop novel therapies. A core component of this BSc programme is a research project in a cutting-edge infectious disease or immunology lab.
For more information, including details on how to apply, see our Intercalated BSc pages.
The course information sheet is a printable version of the information on this web page, which you can download here.
You will develop an in-depth understanding of infectious and immunologically-mediated diseases.
You will explore current trends in cutting-edge areas of research by working alongside international experts at a leading research institution.
You will be taught by internationally renowned scientists.
Graduates have been authors on scientific papers as a result of their BSc project, and some have gone on to present their research at conferences.
