What qualifications do I need?

You will need four GCSEs at grade D (or above) or a relevant Level 1 qualification. You would be expected to possess good numeracy and communication skills and demonstrate a commitment to working in this subject. All applicants will need to have a successful interview. The course is intended for those with determination to complete and progress.

What’s involved?

The course is divided into a number of theory and practical sessions, often using the “hands-on” aspects to reinforce your understanding of basic concepts and tune your skills
A number of different units may be studied, these may include:

  • Working with computer hardware
  • Creating digital graphics and animations
  • Building a digital portfolio
  • Designing commercial websites
  • Assembling and configuring simple computer networks
  • Solving problems and writing computer applications
How will I be studying?

This one year course is taught through a combination of lectures, practical sessions and online learning resources which can be accessed via the College’s VLE (Virtual Learning Environment). The College strives to deliver all sessions in a way which is commercially relevant, simulating roles and tasks that may be found in the workplace.
The College has a well stocked range of hardware and software to be used and examined and your studies will involve you using industry-standard tools and software which help to prepare you for the workplace.
Assessment is achieved through a combination of course-work assignments and some external assessment.

Where can I move on to after this course?

Although successful learners can target junior IT roles with various employers, most choose to progress to a Level 3 programme at the College, allowing them to gain deeper knowledge of the particular computer subjects they enjoy.  This improves career opportunities or this can open the door to higher level education at a university.
Due to the nature of the Level 3 programme, you can diversify when progressing into any of the following programmes:

  • Level 3 Computing and Programming
  • Level 3 Creative E- Media and Design
  • Level 3 Graphic Design with Photography

Which route you follow will likely depend on your final grade profile.  Ongoing tutorial support will help you to shape these decisions as you progress.
